If you have a soft spot for dusty, black-and-white folk tales, you might actually enjoy this. It’s definitely not for the modern viewer who needs a fast-paced plot or fancy CGI to stay awake.
If you hate theater-style acting or movies that feel like they were filmed inside a wooden box, skip this. Honestly, the whole thing feels like a stage play that someone just happened to point a camera at.
The princess is loud. I mean, she really leans into the 'hard to please' bit, and after a while, you start to wonder if she’s just bored out of her mind. Watching the suitors get kicked out is pretty repetitive, but there’s a certain satisfaction in seeing the smug brothers fail.
The pacing is a bit all over the place. Sometimes it feels like the director forgot to yell 'cut' because a shot lingers on a face for a few seconds too long. It’s awkward, but in a way that feels oddly human.
It’s not quite the same vibe as the more polished Café Elektric, which feels like a different universe entirely. This one is much more grounded in that 'once upon a time' feeling that makes you want to drink hot tea and ignore your phone.
Ashelad is the only one who feels like a real person, even if he is a bit too clever for his own good. The older brothers are just caricatures of arrogance, which makes their inevitable failure pretty fun to watch.
I caught myself drifting off a bit during the middle act. It happens. It’s not a movie you watch for high-octane thrills, that’s for sure.
One weird detail: the way the characters stand in the frame. They are almost always perfectly centered, like they’re waiting for a portrait to be painted. It’s distracting once you notice it. 🖼️
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it better than watching Opening Night for the tenth time? Maybe, if you just want something simple and weirdly nostalgic.
Don't expect it to change your life. Just enjoy the ride for what it is.
