If you’re in the mood for something that feels like a caffeinated panic attack from 1930, The Bath Between is for you.
People who like quiet, sophisticated humor will 100% hate this movie. 🛁
It stars Clark and McCullough. They were a big deal in vaudeville, and you can tell because they never stop moving.
Bobby Clark is the one with the painted-on glasses. He just draws them on his face with a grease pencil.
It is weirdly distracting but also kind of great in a low-budget way.
The plot is basically nothing. They are in a hotel or maybe a bathhouse? 🏨
Honestly, I lost track because they talk so fast it’s hard to keep up with the words.
They just keep running in and out of rooms and shouting at everyone. 🏃♂️
There is this one bit where Bobby Clark keeps trying to get into a bathtub. The way he moves is so jittery.
It reminds me a bit of the energy in His Meal Ticket, but maybe even more chaotic and loud.
Paul McCullough mostly just stands there being the 'straight man.' He looks perpetually confused by his own friend.
The sound quality is kind of crunchy. It’s that early talkie sound where everything sounds like it was recorded inside a tin can.
But that adds to the charm, I guess? It feels crusty and real.
I noticed that the extras in the background look genuinely terrified. Like they weren't told what the comedians were going to do next.
There's a lady in a hallway who looks like she wants to leave the set immediately. I don't blame her.
Some of the jokes are definately dated. Actually, most of them are pretty old-fashioned.
But the sheer speed of it is what matters. It’s like they’re trying to pack 2 hours of comedy into 20 minutes.
The ending doesn't really end. It just sort of stops. 🎥
Like the camera man ran out of film and everyone just went home for lunch.
If you liked Hick Manhattan, you'll probably get a kick out of this one too.
It's not 'good' in a traditional way. But it's loud, and sometimes that is enough for a Tuesday afternoon.
The writer is Sidney Lanfield. I wonder if he just wrote 'They scream at each other' on every single page of the script.
Probably. It feels very improvised even if it wasn't.
Anyway, give it a watch if you want to see a man with fake glasses yell at a bathtub. 🛁
It’s better than watching something boring like Alexander Hamilton if you're not in a history mood.
Just don't expect it to make any sense at all.
