4.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Bride of the Lake remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're into dusty, old-fashioned Irish storytelling that leans heavy on the melodrama, you'll probably find something to enjoy here. It isn't exactly a high-octane thriller. If you need pacing that feels modern or a plot that doesn't rely on people standing around looking suspiciously at each other for ten minutes, you should definitely skip it.
There's this moment in the middle where the framing plot really kicks in. It’s supposed to be high-stakes, but the way the rival sneaks around feels like a school play. I couldn't help but laugh a little at how obvious the villainy was. He’s basically twirling an invisible mustache.
The scenery is great, though. It’s got that specific, damp look of Ireland that makes you want to wrap up in a wool blanket immediately. 🌧️
I caught myself thinking about Romola while watching this. Both movies have that stiff, theatrical quality where the actors seem to be reciting lines to the back of the room rather than to each other. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, just a different rhythm than we're used to now.
It’s not a masterpiece, and honestly, the plot is thinner than a piece of parchment. But there’s a certain sincerity to the performances that kept me from checking my phone. It’s not trying to be a deep, philosophical heavy-hitter like Through Turbulent Waters. It just wants to tell you a story about a guy who got a raw deal.
Sometimes, that's enough for a rainy afternoon. 🕯️
