6.2/10

A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Valiant Is the Word for Carrie remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school melodramas that aren't afraid to be a little messy, then yes. You'll probably enjoy this if you have a soft spot for 1930s tearjerkers where the lead character is constantly getting the short end of the stick. If you need your movies to be fast-paced or strictly logical, you might want to skip it.
Gladys George is the whole show here. Seriously. She plays a woman labeled as the town 'trollop'—which is a word I haven't used in a while—who ends up raising two kids she didn't technically start out with. Most actors would have played this for pure sympathy, but she gives it a weird, jagged edge that feels surprisingly real.
The dry-cleaning business plot sounds like a weird thing to anchor a movie on, right? It works though. It’s the kind of gritty detail that makes you think the writers were actually paying attention to the world for once.
There’s a moment about halfway through where she just stares at the wall, thinking about what she’s given up. No music. No big dialogue dump. Just her face. It’s the kind of thing you miss if you’re checking your phone.
The kids are fine, I guess. They do the whole 'orphaned waif' thing well enough without being too annoying. It reminded me a bit of the sentimentality found in Circumstantial Evidence, though this hits way harder because Gladys George is doing so much work to keep the whole thing from floating away into total soap opera territory.
It’s not perfect. The plot feels like it’s being pulled in four directions at once sometimes. You can feel the movie trying really hard to make sure you know exactly who the 'good' people are and who the 'bad' ones are. It’s a little heavy-handed, but it works.
I left the movie thinking about how much actors mattered back then. You take Gladys George out of this, and it’s just another forgettable story about a lady doing laundry. With her? It’s something else entirely.
It’s not the best thing I’ve seen this month, but it’s far from the worst. Give it a look if you want to watch someone act their heart out for ninety minutes. 📽️
