Biography
San Francisco lit its gas lamps on 27 December 1885 and, somewhere among the glow, Edward Joseph Boland drew his first breath. By the early ’20s the city’s erstwhile street kid had slipped into flickering black-and-white, becoming the comic spark in Oliver Twist (1922) and, five years later, the affable sidekick in F. W. Murnau’s landmark Sunrise (1927). Between silents and early talkies he rode the rails of The Lightning Flyer (1931), trading quips with cowboys and villains alike. Off-screen he claimed Jean Hope as his leading lady in a lifelong two-shot. The final curtain fell on 3 February 1935 in Santa Monica, steps from the Pacific he had once crossed only on celluloid.
