Biography

Oxford, 2 July 1867: Herbert Prior first drew breath in the city of dreaming spires, a birth that would seed a career spanning silent flickers and early talkies. By 1913 he had stepped before the camera for The Golden Wedding, and four years later he tackled Dickens as the haunted Pip in Great Expectations. In 1926 he traded the cobblestones of Victorian London for the flappers of Why Girls Go Back Home, proving his pen could chart the same terrain as his acting chops. Off-screen he shared life—and credits—with Mabel Trunnelle, his wife and frequent collaborator. The final curtain fell on 3 October 1954 in sun-drenched Los Angeles, closing a 87-year journey that began amid Oxford’s stone walls and ended beneath Hollywood’s neon skies.
