Summary
In this 1923 cinematic adaptation of George M. Cohan’s stage sensation, the narrative follows Johnny Jones, a quintessential American jockey whose exuberant charisma is matched only by his equestrian prowess. Transported to the verdant, high-stakes landscapes of England, Jones is commissioned to pilot 'The Earl of Bloomsburg’s' prize horse at the prestigious English Derby. However, the pastoral elegance of the turf is soon marred by the machinations of Robert Anstead, a nefarious gambler whose moral bankruptcy drives him to orchestrate a multifaceted sabotage. Anstead constructs a labyrinthine frame-up, branding Johnny a thief while simultaneously abducting his beloved sweetheart to coerce a deliberate loss. The film evolves into a high-octane synthesis of melodramatic peril and athletic triumph, questioning whether the purity of the sport can survive the corrosive influence of criminal greed.
