Biography
J. Gordon Edwards first stepped into the limelight as a performer, but the footlights soon gave way to the glow of a director’s lamp. After shaping shows at St. Louis’s Suburban Garden Theatre and New York’s Academy of Music, he caught the eye of William Fox in 1914 and traded the stage for the flicker of celluloid. Over the next decade he guided Theda Bara through twenty-two velvet-toned fantasies, earning the star’s own verdict: “the nicest director I ever worked with.” Generations later, his storytelling blood resurfaced in grandson Blake Edwards, who kept the family’s cinematic pulse alive.
