Summary
A scathing yet comedic exploration of the nascent American obsession with status symbols, Six Cylinder Love dissects the precariousness of the middle-class dream through the lens of automotive ownership. The narrative follows a cyclical pattern of financial ruin: first, the Burtons find their domestic tranquility shattered by the maintenance and social expectations of a high-end vehicle, only to pass the mechanical albatross to the Sterlings, who suffer a similar descent into insolvency. The film serves as a cautionary fable about the seductive power of luxury, culminating in the ultimate irony as the car—once a badge of elite aspiration—is acquired by the apartment building's janitor, suggesting that the machine itself is an indifferent god that demands sacrifice from those least able to afford its upkeep.
Synopsis
The ownership of an expensive automobile nearly wrecks the happiness of two families in turn. When the Burtons and the Sterlings are broke and beginning anew, the janitor of the apartment building buys the car.
