Summary
In the austere tableau of early twentieth‑century America, former coal miner Daniel Slade ascends from the soot‑caked shafts of his youth to the polished corridors of power, his fortunes swelling through shrewd investments that catapult him into the political arena. As he clinches the governorship, his domestic sphere unravels: Mary, his wife, is a creature of the earth, ill‑suited to the glittering parlors and suffocating expectations of high society, and her uncouth outbursts become public embarrassments. Into this fissure steps Katherine Strickland, the urbane daughter of a senator, whose cultivated poise and strategic allure tempt Daniel away from his rustic devotion. Yet, as the veneer of ambition fades, Slade confronts the stark truth of his heart, recognizing that the genuine affection for Mary eclipses any allure of aristocratic convenience, prompting a return to his erstwhile companion and a reaffirmation of his humble roots.
