Summary
Jeannette Peret, a young woman tethered to the prosaic confines of her father’s Greenwich Village cigar shop, embarks upon a transatlantic odyssey, a desperate quest for an elusive love she believes denied to her by the staid realities of home. Her initial foray into Parisian romance casts her under the spell of le Bebe, a colossal, earthy vegetable peddler whose raw, untamed vitality initially captivates her. However, the veneer of his rustic charm soon cracks, revealing an unsophisticated bluntness that disillusions her refined sensibilities, proving him an inadequate vessel for her idealized affections. Coincidentally, Edward Livingston, a scion of wealth from her own American social circle, and once a dismissive suitor, reappears on the European stage, now recognizing the profound misjudgment of his past indifference towards Jeannette. Yet, Livingston, too, harbors a significant, undisclosed flaw, a chink in his gilded armor that threatens to mirror her previous romantic disappointments. It is only amidst the cataclysmic, ironic crucible of global conflict – the outbreak of war – that Jeannette’s protracted search for genuine connection finds its unexpected, tranquil resolution, forcing a re-evaluation of love, sacrifice, and the true measure of a human spirit beyond superficial attractions.
