Summary
In the shadow of a devastating war, the disillusioned Paul Kurt drifts through Budapest, finding fleeting solace in hedonism until he encounters Anna Galambos. His own profound sense of unworthiness, however, compels him to forsake her, inadvertently setting in motion a tragic sequence of events. Heartbroken and adrift, Anna retreats to her father’s employ at the formidable estate of Count Franz, a figure of stern, almost despotic, authority. Amidst the conniving machinations of Franz's avaricious brothers, Lazlos and Michael, who covet his inheritance, Anna — her spirit crushed by Paul's abandonment — reluctantly accepts the Count's proposal. The brothers, seeking to undermine Franz, orchestrate a plot to compromise Anna, unknowingly enlisting Paul for the task. Upon discovering the target is his beloved Anna, Paul is plunged into a desperate struggle: to expose the conspiracy, reclaim Anna's shattered trust, and ultimately win her back from a life of quiet despair, convincing both her and the Count of his genuine transformation.
