Summary
Amid the resin-thick air of a timber empire’s outer rim, a misanthrope carved from knotty pine and regret keeps counsel with the crows and the ghosts of debts unpaid. Years earlier a smiling thief in gentleman’s garb had spirited away his infant daughter and the marrow of his marriage; now that same predator struts into camp wearing the dusk like a cape, expecting silence. Instead he is hauled by wrist and collar into cathedral-dark spruce where axe-blades glint like communion wafers and every snapping twig is a broken promise. A bullet is never fired; mercy, more savage than vengeance, looms. The misanthrope releases his quarry, returns alone, is clapped in irons, and—through the alchemy of evidence, memory, and a community suddenly awake—walks free at dawn to reclaim the small warm bodies that once were stolen, wife and child blinking against the light like something newly invented.
