Summary
Joyce Lyndon, a polished debutante of the upper echelons, finds her impending nuptials to the vivacious Grant Garrison shattered when Grant, intoxicated by reckless bravado, lures the judge's daughter into a seedy roadhouse. The night spirals into tragedy as Grant meets his demise at the hands of a vengeful, abandoned wife. Terrified, Joyce flees the scene, only to be intercepted by the enigmatic Martin Antrim, a man whose motives are cloaked in shadow. Antrim offers her sanctuary, demanding in return a passage into her glittering social circle. As the plot unfurls, Antrim extracts a damning confession from Grant's widow, while Joyce, confronting blackmail from innkeepers, retrieves a incriminating handbag that could rewrite the narrative of guilt and innocence. The tangled web of deception, class tension, and redemption culminates in a tense showdown that forces each character to confront the consequences of their desires.
