Summary
In the penumbral shadows of a 1920s Paris, Mona, a disenfranchised American art student, finds herself adrift after the sudden evaporation of her academic patronage. The City of Light becomes a labyrinth of Stygian despair, leading her to the frigid embrace of the River Seine. At the precipice of oblivion, she is intercepted by Douglas, a charismatic actor whose intervention is less an act of charity than a catalyst for a radical metamorphosis. Two years hence, the destitute waif has been replaced by the 'White Moth,' a phantasmagorical creature of the stage whose presence ignites a feverish obsession within the Parisian social hierarchy. She has become a mirror for the city's desires—a figure of unattainable elegance for women and a siren of ruinous attraction for men—yet beneath the gossamer wings of her celebrity lies the lingering trauma of her near-erasure and the complex debt owed to the man who refashioned her soul.
