Summary
Amid the granite cathedrals of California’s Sierra Nevada, two boys who once carved their initials into ponderosa bark become men whose hearts are carved by the same woman. Jim Thorpe, rangy and reticent, worships Eve Marsham from the respectful distance of a poet; Ned, his swaggering cousin, claims her like a prospector snatching a nugget from a stream. When wedding bells replace campfire songs, Jim exiles himself to the steaming river towns of the Amazon, nursing a wound that feels older than the mountains themselves. Upon his return he finds Yosemite no longer a sanctuary but a tribunal: Ned has metastasized into a bootleg emperor, ruling from a half-built dam whose concrete ribs strangle the valley, while Eve, once luminous as moonlight on Bridalveil Fall, now flinches at every footfall. The trail that once echoed with laughter becomes a vertiginous ledge where love, guilt and retribution negotiate their narrow footing above a 3,000-foot drop.
Synopsis
Cousins Jim and Ned Thorpe are best friends, but that comes to an end when they both vie for the affections of Eve Marsham, and Ned wins her. Jim leaves for South America, but when he returns some time later he finds that things have drastically changed--Ned is now a hardened criminal and, in addition, is badly mistreating his wife Eve.
