Biography

Frank Currier, whose life began in Norwich, Connecticut, on September 4, 1857, became an eminent presence in the silent film industry. Hailed by Photoplay magazine as 'the dean of cinema actors,' he carved out a prolific career as an American actor and director. His extensive filmography boasts appearances in 133 features between 1912 and 1928, in addition to helming 19 directorial projects in the single year of 1916. Currier solidified his reputation as a premier character star for the influential Vitagraph company throughout the 1910s, contributing significantly to the nascent art of cinematic storytelling. He is perhaps most vividly recalled for his memorable portrayal of the Roman Admiral in the epic 1925 film Ben-Hur, a role where his character famously adopted Judah Ben-Hur (Ramon Novarro) as his son, after being rescued during a dramatic sea battle. Currier's impactful journey concluded tragically in Hollywood, California, on April 22, 1928, when he succumbed to blood poisoning following a finger injury sustained in a car door accident.
