Summary
In the vibrant, often decadent milieu of the Parisian Latin Quarter, Paul Granville, an expatriate painter of soaring ambition, seeks to capture the quintessence of historical feminine virtue. His muse and mistress, Joline Hofer, possesses a mercurial beauty that serves as the foundation for his hagiographic portraits. However, the equilibrium of their bohemian existence is shattered when a painting of the Madonna, modeled by the vivacious Joline, purportedly manifests a divine miracle. This metaphysical intrusion into their secular lives precipitates a profound psychological schism in Joline. Stricken by a newfound spiritual clarity, she renounces her life of aesthetic vanity and carnal attachment, embarking upon a path of asceticism and selfless service. This metamorphosis from a creature of the salon to a vessel of piety is not merely a personal salvation; it becomes the very mechanism through which Granville is later rescued from the brink of physical and moral oblivion, illustrating a poignant interplay between the creator and the created, the profane and the sacred.
