Ronald is a brilliant but physically inept high school valedictorian who uses his graduation speech to launch a scathing attack on the 'uselessness' of athletics. His intellectual arrogance backfires when his sweetheart, Mary, chooses the brawny athlete Jeff over him, citing Ronald's lack of physical vitality. Desperate to reclaim her affection, Ronald enrolls at Clayton College, trading his books for a varsity letter he is fundamentally ill-equipped to earn. The film follows his systematic, often agonizing attempt to master various sports—from baseball to track and field—culminating in a high-stakes rescue where his failed training suddenly, and violently, manifests as a series of heroic feats. It is a story of a man who realizes that while the mind is a weapon, the body is the vehicle that must carry it into battle.
