Summary

A sun-flecked German river becomes the fatal stage for an illicit idyll: May, holidaying with her authoritarian father, is lured by the river’s salt-song and the calloused grace of Max, the boatman who polishes wood as if it were amber. Their courtship is a choreography of glances—oar dipping, hem lifting, moonlight caught in a wineglass—until patriarchal thunder cracks the night. One kiss too many, one shout too sharp, and Max slips beneath the black mirror, lungs filling with silted starlight while May’s scream ricochets off weeping willows.
