Summary
In a cleft of the Kentucky Appalachians—where fog clings to blackjack oaks like remorse and every creek seems to murmur the names of the dead—the Lee and Mitchell bloodlines have spent decades trading lead and legends, until only the echo remains: Ben Lee, a patriarch ossified by grief; Morning Glory, his granddaughter, whose very name feels like a taunt to the dawn; and a nameless Mitchell infant smuggled into the care of Dominie Jones, a circuit-riding preacher with a Bible in one hand and a half-healed conscience in the other. Fifteen silent winters compress the feud into lore until Jack Winslow, a cartographer of the modern world, strides in with transit and theodolite, mapping contours only to discover the uncharted topography of the heart. Morning Glory, equal parts vestal and vixen, reciprocates, igniting the covetous fury of Dave, a moonstruck oddball whose slack jaw hides a cunning as sharp as a turkey-call. His bungled assassinations—boulder, poisoned well, sniper’s perch—fail, yet succeed in branding Jack the last Mitchell. Honor’s cruel statute demands blood; Morning Glory’s rifle cracks, the surveyor crumples, and guilt pools darker than any gunpowder. But providence arrives wearing a clerical collar: Jones unveils Dave as the true Mitchell scion, shifting the crosshair of destiny and allowing love to limp, bloodied but breathing, toward a tentative dawn.
Synopsis
A feud has been raging between the Lee and Mitchell families, in the forbidden valley of the Kentucky hills. The lone survivors are Ben Lee, his granddaughter Morning Glory and a young Mitchell boy who is given refuge by minister Dominie Jones. Fifteen years pass and Jack Winslow, a surveyor, comes to the valley and falls in love with Morning Glory. Their romance is opposed by Dave, a young half-wit who also loves Morning Glory and, out of jealousy, makes several attempts on Jack's life. When Jack is suspected of being the last surviving Mitchell, Morning Glory, acting in accordance with her family code of honor, shoots and wounds him. Soon after, Jones reappears and explains that Dave is the real Mitchell heir, thus clearing the path for Jack and Morning Glory's reconciliation.
