Paul Sinclair is the quintessential figure of 1920s American industry—a man whose life is as structured as the coffee contracts he manages for a massive New York syndicate. Engaged to the socially appropriate Helen Graham, Paul’s trajectory is set toward a comfortable, if uninspired, domesticity. However, a business excursion to Rio de Janeiro shatters this equilibrium. Through the American consul, Paul is introduced to a world far removed from the boardroom: the pulsating, shadow-drenched nightlife of Brazil. It is here he encounters Lola, a café dancer whose magnetism is not merely physical but spiritual.
