Summary
In the twilight of their lives, three solitary gentlemen—Clyde (William Haines), the stoic James (Alec B. Francis), and the irascible Professor Whitcomb (Claude Gillingwater)—are drawn together by a shared reminiscence of a youthful affection for the enigmatic Eleanor (Eleanor Boardman). Decades later, fate delivers Eleanor’s orphaned daughter, Lily (Zasu Pitts), into their modest townhouse, a fragile blossom thrust into a garden of seasoned cynicism. The trio, initially bewildered, assume guardianship, each projecting his own unspoken longing onto the child. As Lily’s vivacious curiosity awakens dormant tenderness, the men confront the ghosts of their past, wrestling with regret, unfulfilled romance, and the paradox of paternal love. Their domestic routine, punctuated by comic missteps and tender revelations, culminates in a poignant tableau where the boundaries between mentorship and parenthood dissolve, and the three wise fools discover that redemption can blossom at any age.
