Biography

Anna Quirentia Nilsson, better known as Anna Q, was born on 30 March 1888 in Ystad, Sweden. She emigrated to the United States in 1905. Standing 5 ft 7 in, her blonde hair and striking looks earned her a place as a sought‑after model for leading fashion photographers and artists. In 1907 she was named the most beautiful girl in America, and four years later she made her film debut in *Molly Pitcher* (1911). The debut turned her into an overnight sensation and established her as a silent‑era superstar during the early 20th century. By 1914 she was declared the most beautiful actress in the world, and in 1919 Photoplay magazine called her “the ideal American girl.” She worked with Hollywood’s top studios—Goldwyn, Famous Players (Paramount), Metro and First National—continuing to thrive throughout the 1920s, the age of flappers and jazz. In 1926 she was voted the most popular actress. A serious setback occurred in 1928 when a horse accident fractured her thigh. Writing to her Swedish relatives she lamented, “…no tragedy is greater than mine. I am still a young star and suddenly everything is lost.” Fans sent roughly 30 000 letters a month, and her rushed recovery ultimately required doctors to shorten her leg. By 1931 she returned to the screen, though her former stardom had faded. She appeared in about forty more films until her retirement in 1954. She portrayed a bridge player—often called a “wax work”—in Norma Desmond’s mansion in *Sunset Boulevard* (1950), sharing the set with former silent‑film co‑star H.B. Warner. Four years later she had a small role in the musical classic *Seven Brides for Seven Brothers* (1954). Anna Q. Nilsson died on 11 February 1974, just six weeks shy of her 85th birthday.
