Biography
Ayr, Ontario, welcomed Joseph Kilgour on 11 July 1863, and from that small Canadian town he set out to conquer stages and, later, flickering silver screens. Audiences of the silent era remember him for the longing glance he gave *My Lady’s Slipper* (1916), the brittle elegance he brought to *The House of Mirth* (1918), and the fierce hope he carried through *The Dawn of Freedom* (1916). Off-camera, he shared his life with Angela L. Kilgour, his partner from roughly 1881 until her death in 1929. Kilgour’s own final curtain fell on 21 April 1933, in Bay Shore, Long Island, New York, closing a life lived in the bright glare of footlights and klieg lights alike.
