Summary
In the chiaroscuro of a metropolis that never sleeps, a waif named Pigeon Deering presses her hungry nose against the plate-glass of privilege, watching satin ghosts waltz beneath crystal chandeliers; one pirouette later, a blade flashes, a body crumples, and the window becomes a mirror reflecting her own ravenous hunger for recognition. The police drag her away, yet instead of cowering she seizes the spotlight like a seasoned diva, confessing to the slaughter with a grin that could slice silk. At her trial, Arthur Beal—lawyer, moral cartographer—maps the abyss between infamy and integrity, unmasking the true killer while pleading with the girl to refuse the carnival of greasepaint and ticket-takers. Pigeon, drunk on headlines, spurns him; Beal therefore invents a phantom theatrical contract, lures her to his pastoral exile, and lets silence, chickens, and starlight chip away at her varnish. When a lecherous drifter—convinced by tabloid ink that she is easy prey—assaults her, the last scale falls; she awakens to the hollow clang of celebrity, clasps Arthur’s steadiness, and trades the roar of the crowd for the hush of shared breath and wedding vows.
Synopsis
Pigeon Deering, a girl of the tenements, while watching a society ball through a window, witnesses a murder and is arrested. Because she craves notoriety, Pigeon confesses to the crime. During her trial, attorney Arthur Beal exposes the murderer and urges her not to accept any offer from theatrical producers hoping to cash in on her "fame." When Pigeon rejects his advice, Arthur fakes an offer, which she accepts, and has her brought to his country farm for "rehearsals." An attack by a hired man, who assumes from her publicity that she is susceptible, finally convinces Pigeon of her mistake, and she accepts Arthur's proposal of marriage.
