Summary
A nimble-fingered Meadville drifter, Johnny Carroll, glides through gas-lit avenues with the swagger of a born pickpocket until the iron clasp of Detective McQuade snaps shut outside Judge Kerrigan’s chambers. The magistrate, recalling the boy’s river-town mischief rather than malice, offers clemency: a one-way ticket back to cedar-scented storefronts and Betty Bedford’s lantern-lit smile. Reformed, Johnny stocks tins behind the counter while moonlight rekindles old courtship rhythms. Yet shadows trail him: his former confederates slink into the village, whispering blackmail, brandishing skeleton keys, and forcing him to crack his benefactor’s safe. Mid-heist, conscience detonates; fists fly; Betty’s alarmed footfalls fetch the town. Thieves shackled, Johnny’s slate is scrubbed white, the wedding bells ring out over a horizon no longer rimmed with sirens.
Synopsis
Johnny Carroll joins a gang of thieves and is arrested by Detective McQuade for picking Judge Kerrigan's pocket. However, the judge remembers Johnny from his hometown of Meadville, and persuades him to reform. The young man returns home, takes a job in a grocery store, and renews his romance with Betty Bedford. Later, Johnny's former gang arrive in town and again try to recruit him. They induce him to crack the safe in Mr. Bedford's store, threatening to reveal his criminal past if he refuses. Upon opening the safe, Johnny refuses to be a party to the crime and fights the gang. Betty hears the commotion and returns with help. After the thieves are captured, Johnny and Betty are married.
