The Port of Doom
Summary
Foghorns groan across a sodium-lit wharf where riveted plates sweat rust; Detective Kate Kirby, trench-coat collar slicing her jawline, stalks a conspiracy stitched from salt, sweat, and jealousy. The shipowner’s daughter, luminous as a pearl in a gutter, is loved by two men: the steadfast Captain—whose compass now points toward a sabotaged reef—and a smirking rival who has slipped forged charts into the captain’s sea-chest. Kirby’s magnifying glass catches the tell-tale tear in the parchment, the faint aroma of violet ink, the tobacco fleck that belongs to none of the crew. She races through coal-black alleys, swings from cargo nets, and confronts the rival in a cargo hold stacked high with coffins bound for the tropics. The doomed freighter ghosts out of the harbor; torpedo-shaped clouds mirror its hull, and gulls shriek like unpaid mourners. Kirby boards a pilot cutter, chases the freighter through squalls, and in a thunderclap-lit showdown forces the rival to confess just as the ship kisses the reef. Timbers scream, boilers burst, yet the captain—now forewarned—beaches his vessel, saving crew and cargo, though the rival slips into the foam, handcuffed to his own treachery.
