Biography

In 1909 Al Christie walked onto the Nestor lot just as movies were learning to run; three years later the studio handed him the reins for a slate of rip-snorting westerns. 1916 found him striking out under his own banner, churning out brisk two-reel comedies and the odd full-length romp while his older brother Charles handled directing and producing chores a few sound-stages away. On a balmy 1926 Florida afternoon Christie shared a backseat with actress Vera Steadman and Marie Prevost’s mother, Mrs. H. Prevost; a sudden crash snapped the older woman’s spine, ending her life, while Christie and Steadman escaped with nothing worse than torn skin and shaken nerves.
