Biography
Born among the rolling fields of Ellers—then still the Electorate of Hesse—on 28 September 1861, Wilhelm Diegelmann stepped onto the stage and never stepped off. Audiences still feel his pulse in the prowling energy of The Wildcat (1921), the courtly intrigue of Anna Boleyn (1920), and the storm-lashed legend of Der Schimmelreiter (1934). His final curtain fell in Berlin on 1 March 1934, leaving the city—and cinema—quieter by one formidable presence.
