Biography
Cordele, Georgia, witnessed the first breath of Walter Hiers on 18 July 1893, and from that small town he sprinted straight onto silent-era screens. Between 1916’s coming-of-age hit Seventeen and the same year’s biblical spectacle The Conquest of Canaan, audiences learned how quickly his comic timing could flip a scene. Six years later he squared off against things that go bump in the night in The Ghost Breaker, sealing his reputation as the go-to everyman who could wring laughs from hauntings or heartbreak. Off-camera he swapped lines for vows with Adah Lavinia McWilliams. The curtain rang down in Los Angeles, California, on 27 February 1933, but the reels still spin.
